Chiharu Shiota: In Silence – QAGOMA Blog

In Silence was born out of a memory of the next-door property burning down in the middle of the night time when Chiharu Shiota was a youngster. A burned piano and audience seating, which includes the bordering area, are covered in black thread. When symbolising silence, the soundless piano performs visual music. This set up can be seen in ‘The Soul Trembles’ at the Gallery of Modern Artwork (GOMA), Brisbane until finally 3 Oct 2022.

DELVE Deeper: The Soul Trembles in Brisbane

When I was nine, there was a fire at the dwelling next to ours.

The subsequent day, there was a piano sitting down exterior the home. Scorched right up until it was jet black, it seemed an even extra gorgeous image than right before.

An ineffable silence came above me, and more than the next few days, any time the window blew that burning smell into our residence, I could really feel my voice get started to cloud more than.

There are items that sink deep into the recesses of my intellect, and other people that fall short to acquire both a actual physical or verbal sort, no make any difference how really hard you attempt.

But they exist as souls with no a tangible form.

The extra you feel about them, the far more their sounds disappear from my intellect, and the additional tangible their existence results in being.
