Ask A Gallery Owner | To sign or not to sign . . . that is the question

In the next email exchange, I solution an artist’s query about seen signatures on artwork – what is your viewpoint? Article in the comments.

Jason,

I’m so happy you had been a presenter yet again in this year’s Telesummit. You offered a fantastic offer of benefit. I’m positive several who participated are quite grateful.

I do have a dilemma. In your practical experience of advertising art, have you observed any effects on whether or not or not 2-D artists signal their perform in a way the signature is visible? My paintings and mixed media work are abstract. I have believed a signature detracts from the work. I do signal, title and give the dimensions of my operate (not the day) on the again. Really should I re-consider my signature practice?

My Response:

Tom,

Many thanks for the electronic mail. I would like I could give you studies on your problem (“You are 29.75% extra possible to provide your artwork if you involve your signature on the entrance of a piece”) but studies like that are tricky to appear by in this small business. What I can tell you is that over the yrs I have experienced artists who do not indication their work on the front and I perceived some hesitation among the collectors about the do the job since of it. I simply cannot say for absolutely sure that it prevented any revenue, but my perspective is “why hazard it?” Artwork purchasers are accustomed to signatures noticeable on the entrance of do the job, and commonly in the reduce ideal corner. My tendency would be to give them what they are employed to.

You can lower the aesthetic impact of the signature although by trying to keep it small and discrete, and by utilizing lower-contrast shade.
